That was me, exactly, two weeks ago. And all I did was stoop over for too long, trying to get some clothes out of the dryer for my little guy (#Dadlopnik), and then stood up. Horrendous back spasm, pretty much immobile that whole day (my daughter’s birthday!), got a steroid shot and muscle relaxers the next morning. Wore those Shaq-approved heat wraps for days after that, and could finally stand up straight and walk a full stride a week later. I think I’m back to 100% now; maybe that incident will convince me to stretch more often and get a little more in shape...

Hope you’re back to normal soon.

Now that I’m older I realize how important it is to be more involved. As a teen I didn’t know how to interact with a young kid but my gf has an 8 year old son and our interactions are great, guess I’m just more mature now.

Aleve is great. Here’s a tip: If you need immediate relief take Advil and if you need long term relief take Aleve (it takes longer to work but lasts longer). Don’t take aleve for a migraine/bad headache because you won’t find any relief for almost 2 hours.

I’m 35, played football in college and have a career in law enforcement. Waking up in the morning is painful. And each of the past 3 years I have put my back out at least once.

The last time I did it, I had to grab my pants at the knee to lift my left leg into my car. It was terrible.

If you’re not going to exercise, I at least recommend a regular stretching schedule. It helps a lot for me.

I’m 35 and regularly hurt. I’ve been running to try to get/stay in shape, and realized my hips, knees, and ankles aren’t terribly fond of me pushing it. Looks like a spin cycle is in my future instead.

Not to mention all the random back and neck pains, although much of that comes from lugging around the world's largest 1 year old.

I have never heard of that workout style (5x5s)! I might try it for the next month, and just cycle/abs on the off/in between days. I have always stuck to the 5 day schedule of: M; Arms, T; Legs (so I can walk by friday! LOL) W; Shoulders, Th; Back, F; Chest. Saturdays and sundays Im in full rest mode.

Just be aware that when your numbers get up there the jumps get big. Adding 5-10 lbs a week on your bench is not sustainable in the long run.

I’m seeing, I guess setting a ceiling would help avoid going over board. What confuses me is at what weight to start with. I can almost effortlessly handle 45s on either of the specified workouts, (except for shoulder presses, that I would say 25-35s). I never try doing the one rep max since I rather avoid any injury.

I know I can do 225 for 8 on flat bench without a spot, which means I can probably add a few more lbs, and I can do just as much squatting ass to grass, probably even a lot more, but to keep the rest of my week civil I dont pass that. And for stiff leg deadlift (off a platform) I can do 205 for 8. Rows can probably be done at 135 (I usually use a machine for this so Im not sure how it would work out on the Olympic bar).

Suggestions?

Best bet is to just start on the lighter side and let some time progress.

Bench start @ 225, since you have 4 warm up sets. If your squat numbers are similar then do that too.

Deadlifting will be from the floor, maybe dial in 225 and adjust if that’s way too light. Better to be safe than have an injured lower back.

Row at 135, and be sure to keep your form tight.

If any of the weights seem REALLY light then adjust your numbers, but for the most part it should be not too bad weeks 1 and 2. Since you haven’t run it before you have no baseline and that’s got to be established first. Most people start too heavy and then burn out or get hurt, so keep that in mind.
